Inspired by her quiet and thoughtful aesthetic, Cassandra Ellis’s new collection of furniture and homewares has been designed to be simple, useful and beautiful. A natural extension of the textile goods for which Cassandra Ellis is renowned, in tandem with her growing portfolio of interior styling work.
“The interiors stylist and author has thought deeply
about the nature of home. As a result, her place in south London
is just as much a meditation on living as it is a house.”
The Telegraph, November 2015
Each piece is designed and made in the UK and has been carefully considered so it becomes a lasting part of people’s homes, and, in turn, part of their story. They are also incredibly versatile and can be moved seamlessly from room to room and home to home, as people’s lives and houses change. The classic shapes and finishes sit comfortably and quietly in both traditional and modern settings to create the calm, measured and inspiring feel that Cassandra brings to her interiors.
Cassandra has worked closely with English furniture makers, respected Irish linen mills, potters and wood workers to make pieces that are incredibly well made and reflect the hand of the maker.
“I’ve thought carefully about the proportions, materials and uses for each quilt, chair and table in the collection so that they become part of the long term story of an individual’s or family’s home and life, not just a seasonal trend. Every piece has been consciously designed to be the best quality. They are made to last - as you move from home to home, they can be used in a variety of ways and places and I believe this is how people’s homes should evolve.”
The upholstered furniture celebrates the work of highly skilled and respected furniture makers, using a combination of the best traditional and modern techniques and materials. It’s all about attention to detail – from the hand-made solid wood frames to the weave of the beautiful Irish linen, or the soft supple vegetable-dyed goatskin. Finishing touches include black-headed nail detailing and solid British brass casters.
The tables, stools, lamps and accessories are individually handmade in Cornwall, with a variety of English and European woods. Each piece is individually selected for grain, colour and personality, to create simple and elegant pieces that sit beautifully alongside the upholstered furniture. Brass accents add another level of connection and detail to the simple and refined forms.
Cassandra’s quilts are designed and made in her studio. Each one is unique, featuring one-off pieces of antique fabric from Japan, Africa and the Far East, blended with foundation fabrics including fine Irish linen, Japanese wool and Indian Khadi cotton. They are the root of all the pieces in the collection. They take time, skill and care to create and are a reflection on homes and living. Each one is individually designed, carefully hand-pieced, then robustly quilted by highly skilled quilters, so it is as useful as it is beautiful. They are available as a stock item or as an individual commission.
